This is a wonderful example of a Pre Civil War Era Sharps Model 1853 Saddle Ring Carbine, usually referred to as the "Slant Breech", to differentiate it from the later vertical breech design. This particular model is often referred to as the "John Brown" model due to it's association with abolitionist John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry Arsenal during October 16 18, 1859. Brown's raid was armed with these carbines,
