This is a particularly appealing Civil War era sixth plate tintype portrait of an unidentified Union enlisted soldier whose cap insignia appears to associate him with the Volunteer Militia of Maine. The standing soldier wears a dark frock coat and holds his forage cap so that the insignia on the crown is prominently visible to the camera. The image remains housed behind glass with an ornate brass mat in the surviving
