Physical education teacher Dr. James Naismith created an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the harsh New England winter. A wooden peach basket was hung 10 feet above the gymnasium floor and players shot and dribbled with a soccer ball. The sport of basketball evolved from its humble beginnings and quickly gained worldwide
